Global NGO Leadership Programme

Overview

A global humanitarian organisation wanted to strengthen the capability of managers responsible for leading teams in complex and high-pressure environments. Many had progressed into leadership roles through operational expertise but had received little formal training in how to manage, develop, and motivate their teams.

We designed and delivered an immersive management development programme that brought together managers from multiple regions to build practical leadership capability. The programme focused on real-world management skills that could be applied immediately within their teams.

Over four years the programme helped managers strengthen communication, collaboration, and performance leadership across diverse international teams.

The Challenge

Managers were operating in demanding environments across multiple regions, including the Middle East and South Asia. They were responsible for leading teams delivering critical work, often under pressure and with limited resources.

However, many had not received structured training in key management areas such as:

  • communicating clearly with diverse teams

  • running effective meetings

  • delivering constructive feedback

  • managing performance conversations

  • presenting ideas and influencing stakeholders

  • developing their team members

The organisation needed a programme that would quickly build these capabilities while remaining highly practical and relevant to the realities managers faced in the field.

The Approach

We designed a five-day immersive development programme delivered in a central Middle East location, bringing together managers from several regions to learn and collaborate.

The programme focused on practical capability building rather than theory. Participants worked through interactive workshops covering:

  • communication and collaboration techniques

  • presentation and facilitation skills

  • feedback and coaching methods

  • effective meeting leadership

  • performance management and team development

  • training design and knowledge transfer

Learning was delivered through group activities, simulations, and peer collaboration. Participants practised the techniques in realistic scenarios and received feedback from facilitators and peers.

The programme concluded with participants delivering a final presentation demonstrating how they would apply the tools with their teams.

The Outcome

The programme ran successfully for four consecutive years and brought together managers from multiple regions.

Participants reported immediate improvements in their ability to lead conversations, structure meetings, deliver feedback, and develop their teams.

Feedback scores consistently exceeded 90% positive, with participants highlighting:

  • the practical nature of the programme

  • the relevance to real leadership challenges

  • the opportunity to learn alongside peers from other regions

The organisation saw stronger leadership capability among frontline managers and improved confidence in leading and developing their teams.
